Saturday’s abalone fishing session cancelled due to risky weather conditions

Saturday’s scheduled abalone fishing session has been cancelled ahead of windy weather and choppy conditions, likely to put fishers in danger.

WA fishers will have to wait until later in February to get their abalone fix after the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development announced it will be postponing this coming Saturday’s session due to weather conditions.

The next opportunity for abalone fishing within the West Coast recreational season will be on Saturday, February 17 between 7am and 8am.

An extra session on Saturday, March 9 is also being considered as a replacement for this weekend’s loss.

Department management officer Druime Nolan urged fishers to take note of Saturday’s cancellation and to let fellow recreational fishers know.

“As always, abalone fishing sessions are subject to a safety risk assessment based on predictive weather and ocean conditions in the lead up to scheduled fishing, to determine whether fishing can go ahead or not” Ms Nolan said.

“DPIRD compliance officers will be out and about on Saturday at abalone fishing locations, to ensure no abalone fishing is occurring.”
