Three Collie projects are set to benefit from a $250,000 investment from the State Government through the Collie Futures Small Grants Program.

Last week the State Government announced the Leschenault Catchment Council, the Collie Trails Lodge and a local pizza shop would all benefit from the spending in a push to diversify Collie’s economy though tourism and investment into local businesses.

The LCC has been allocated $100,000 towards its Collie River Cultural Walk - Walking on Country project, helping support a feasibility study to reinstate 75km of the historic Noongar cultural walk trail along the Collie River.

A further $100,000 was allocated to help with the refurbishment of a commercial building into purpose-built short-stay accommodation called the Collie Trails Lodge.

When complete the lodge will benefit the growing trails market allowing for more accommodation offerings in Collie along with the additional short-stay incentives which have previously benefited from the Collie Futures Fund, such as the Collie River Trail Stay.

Finally, the mobile food business Muja Pizza Bar on Wheels was allocated $50,000 allowing a Collie business the opportunity to continue its growth in town.

Regional Development Minister Don Punch said backing the aspirations of a community in transition helped unlock opportunities to diversity and build resilience in the local economy through local businesses or tourism initiatives.

“By attracting major new industries and supporting established businesses to grow, the Cook Labor Government is proud to be creating a strong future for the Collie community,” he said.

Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns said she was delighted to have seen local initiatives taking place through the grants program.

“It’s been great to share in their individual journeys, and I look forward to seeing the latest grant recipients take this exciting next step with assistance provided by the Cook Labor Government,” she said.

“We are committed to continuing to work with the community to set up Collie for a strong future, and it is fantastic to see not only the direct benefits but also the benefits flow on to the community.”
