Western Force offered little respite as brutal Super Rugby draw sees their final month spent mostly in the air

Western Force will have to contend with a torrid travel schedule to finish the Super Rugby season, handed a nightmare run home. The West Australian can reveal the Force will play twice in New Zealand, then return home to Perth, head to Fiji and back in a monster travel burden in the final games of the season. The fixture, expected to be confirmed by Rugby Australia early this week, will also hand the Force a bye in the final home-and-away round of the season. It means the break has effectively no benefit for the Force, despite flying further than any other team in the competition. The club will travel almost 48,000 kilometres this season. The West understands the club has been left disappointed by the draw, particularly the final month of the schedule. The club will play seven home matches at HBF Park, with six family-friendly Saturday night fixtures and one Sunday afternoon match. Force chief executive Niamh O’Connor said the club had been done “no favours” with the brutal late-season draw. “We’re excited about our Super Rugby Pacific fixture and our fans getting access to seven home games again,” she said in a statement. “There’s no doubt in 2025 we’ll need our sea of blue behind us at HBF Park as we’ve had no favours with our travel burden in the fixture, so we’re calling on our fans to get out in numbers to support us and make HBF Park a fortress as we chase a top-six finals berth. “We really want to mark our 20th season celebrations with a huge campaign and with some exciting international signings in the off-season and the benefits of our South Africa spring series, we’re confident we can do that.” It is understood the trip to New Zealand late in the season will be off a six-day break. The Simon Cron-led side finished third-last in 2024, with a 4-10 record. They did not win any of their matches on the road. Force head to South Africa for a pre-season Spring Series, which begins on Thursday against Free State Cheetahs. Backs coach Will Egglestone will lead the team, with head coach Cron to take a backseat to allow his assistant to take the reins. Among the new faces on the tour will be Queensland Reds flier Mac Grealy, who is trialling with the Force, while new recruits Darcy Swain, Nic Dolly and Nick Champion de Crespigny will all travel with the squad. Harry Potter and Tom Robertson will also return from injury and study sabbatical respectively on the tour, while two WA academy products are also among the squad in the form of young flanker Dane Sawers and outside back Justin Landman. Recently re-signed loose forward Reed Prinsep will captain the Force in South Africa, with former Wallabies lock Sam Carter and emerging scrum-half Henry Robertson as vice-captains. “It’s absolutely critical for long-term success for us that we have stronger leadership groups and up-and-coming leaders,” Cron said.
