Dom Sheed’s AFL future hangs in the balance, with the 2018 flag hero likely to miss the entire season after rupturing his ACL at training.

Sheed went down in what West Coast described as an ‘innocuous’ clash at training on Monday before scans confirmed the worst possible news for the 29-year-old midfielder.

It continues a shocking run for the Kalgoorlie product, with repeat hamstring and foot injury setbacks restricting him to just 24 games in the past three seasons.

The Eagles did not provide a timeline for his return, but he is unlikely to feature during the 2025 season and will now consult with medical experts about the best path forward.

It leaves his career at a crossroads, with Sheed out of contract at the end of this season, having signed a four-year extension at the end of 2021.

“Unfortunately, Dom ruptured his ACL in an innocuous incident during training on Monday,” Eagles football manager Gavin Bell said.

“It is extremely disappointing news for Dom after a wretched run with injuries over recent seasons, and I know our players, staff and entire club will offer him their full support during his rehabilitation.

“We will take some time now to consult with Dom and medical experts about the next step, and we will provide a further update at the appropriate time.”

Sheed was twice used as a sub for West Coast last year amid his eight matches, and didn’t feature after round 13 - a month before his premiership coach Adam Simpson was axed.

He showed some promise in the WAFL with back-to-back 30-plus disposal games but could not break his way back into the side as the Eagles turned to youth.

The additions of Liam Baker and Jack Graham, as well as draftees Bo Allan, Tom Gross and Lucca Greggo in the off-season, were only going to put more pressure on Sheed to perform.
