Something had to change at Adelaide United.
The Reds had just claimed the A-League Women wooden spoon in a dire 2023-24 season.
Pressure was on their stars, Emily Condon among them, and coach Adrian Stenta to turn things around - and they knew it.
"We all were on the same page with how we felt after the results last season - how it's not acceptable," Condon told AAP.
"It doesn't showcase the quality of us as individual players either.
"It's just a matter of we take that on board as individuals and realise that we've got more within us and that we need to be able to do better if we want to be competitive in this league.
"Even coming into pre-season this year we all had a different energy and different vibe about us and how much more competitive we were in the training field."
Fast-forward and Adelaide sit third on the table as one of the most high-octane teams in the league.
Fiona Worts (seven goals), Condon (six goals, three assists), Chelsie Dawber (six goals, two assists) and recruit Erin Healy (five goals, two assists) are all within touching distance of the golden boot.
"We're having a damn good season at the moment and I'm very happy with how we're going,' Condon said.
"Compared to previous seasons, we have a lot more variety in the number of players who are scoring goals and things like that.
"I've been in the club for a few seasons now and we've never been in the top two or three this late into the season.
"It's just a matter of we just keep putting our best foot forward and not worry so much about that (silverware)."
Condon has also created the second-most chances in the league (31).
The 26-year-old, who has one Matildas cap earned as a teenager in 2018, has overcome a wretched run with injury and illness and is only now consistently stringing games together.
"I'm just really enjoying playing football at the moment and being able to do that freely without any restrictions," she said.
"It's always a possibility that I can make it back there. It's not something that I'll set my eyes and my sights on.
"It'll just be an awesome bonus if I can achieve that again."
Adelaide are back in action against Canberra United at Coopers Stadium on Saturday, while Melbourne City host Sydney FC that night.
On Friday, Western Sydney host Newcastle while on Sunday, Melbourne Victory play Central Coast, Brisbane take on Western United and Perth play Wellington.
