Undefeated Melbourne City remain five points clear at the top of the A-League Women ladder after a 1-0 away win over Wellington Phoenix, as the finals race heats up.

Four teams - City, Melbourne Victory, Adelaide United and Western United - have sealed finals placed after a dramatic Sunday ahead of the international break.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Western United locked in a top-six berth and ended Newcastle's finals dream with a 2-0 win over the Jets.

Central Coast then drew within a point of sealing their own finals spot after a 2-1 comeback win over Brisbane that leaves the Roar outside the top six.

With two games to go, Western United (32 points) are fourth, with Central Coast (31) also chasing a home elimination final.

Sixth-placed Canberra United (27) and Brisbane (25) are also jostling for the final two positions while Wellington (23), Sydney (22) and Perth (22) are technically still alive.

At Porirua Park, City moved to 49 points, five clear of Melbourne Victory who still have a game in hand.

City took the lead in the 35th minute when Matildas striker Holly McNamara scored her 12th goal of the season, drawing level with Emily Gielnik at the top of the golden boot race.

A slick cross from the right wing by Lourdes Bosch was met on the volley by McNamara, who nonchalantly flicked it beyond goalkeeper Carolina Vilao.

McNamara had another chance one minute later in front of an open goal but held her head in disbelief after fluffing a left-foot shot.

She had a penalty saved by Vilao in the 55th minute, but City's inaccuracy didn't come back to bite them.

In Newcastle, United took the lead when a corner was nodded towards the goal line, with Catherine Zimmerman on hand to backheel home in the 50th minute.

In the 77th minute, Zimmerman assisted Keiwa Hieda to double United's lead.

Newcastle (20 points) are seven points behind sixth-placed Canberra with two games to go, and cannot make the top six.

Brisbane enjoyed a perfect start when Laini Freier scored in the opening minute in Gosford, delivering the lead inside 22 seconds.

But Central Coast star midfielder Isabel Gomez responded, running from halfway to score the equaliser in the 22nd minute.

Annalise Rasmussen scored in the 71st minute, teed up by Peta Trimis, to give the Mariners the lead, and they held on.
