A-League Men: Perth Glory signing Luke Amos credits Australian move to Tottenham assistant Nick Montgomery

New Perth Glory signing Luke Amos owes his arrival in the A-League Men to current Tottenham assistant coach and former Central Coast Mariners boss Nick Montgomery. Former Queens Park Rangers and Hibernian midfielder Amos is set to take part in the Glory’s clash with Sydney FC at HBF Park on Saturday after the 27 year-old officially signed with Perth last week. After almost 100 games at QPR, Amos battled injuries and a lack of game-time upon his move to the Scottish Premiership, but crossed paths with a noted few Australian exports during his time there. Chief among them was Montgomery, who steered the Mariners to the championship in 2023 before spending nine months on the hot seat at Hibernian. Amos said Montgomery, who joined Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff upon his departure from Hibs, made a big impression on him in a short amount of time. “Even whilst when he was my manager, I had some conversations with him and his assistant Sergio (Raimundo) about the game growing in Australia and I said one day I’d like to go out there,” he said. “He was quite instrumental in this move happening, he was super complimentary of me when, when (football director) Stan Lazaridis and the gaffer were looking for a reference. “I can’t thank him enough. I’ve not known him too long, but in the short time I’ve known him, he’s been an important part in my developing as a footballer and as a man, and now he’s helped me get this opportunity, so I owe him a little bit.” Amos played alongside Socceroos attacker Martin Boyle, rising Australian defensive midfielder Nectar Triantis and Perth product Jack Iredale at Hibs and said they were complimentary of the league. “A lot of the players in the Hibs squad come from the A-League, and you can immediately see their quality, so instantly, I know there’s good players here,” Amos said. “It’s not the most covered league in the UK, but they spoke very highly of it and a lot of people that mentioned the A-League spoke about how it’s growing, the quality is getting better, and it’s something that I really wanted to go and play in.” A Tottenham academy graduate who played one English Premier League game for Spurs, Amos actually made his debut for the club in a pre-season friendly against Juventus at the MCG in 2016. “It’s mad, because that’s actually the last time I was here. I was a young boy, just trying to get a foot in the game,” Amos said. “And here I am, maybe over 100 or so games later, playing in Australia again. It’s a bit of a full circle moment.” Having played under celebrated Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, Amos said he felt his style as a box-to-box midfielder would suit the high-pressing system the Glory are trying to implement. “Throughout my academy days at Tottenham, it was something that was highly encouraged,” he said. “When I was with Mauricio Pochettino, he’s someone that, if you watch all of his teams, they like to press high; as soon as you lose the ball, go win it back. It suits me perfectly. “I like to press, I like to get up and down. Technically, I like to handle the ball, Iike to make a pass. “I’m a bit of an all-action midfielder, a number eight traditionally, up and down, get around, do my bit, and then hopefully score a few goals.”
