Geelong stars go all out for Wacky Wednesday celebrations, including Harley Reid nod

Geelong have continued to lay claim to having the best post-season celebrations, with one Cat paying homage to a now infamous line from journalist Sam McClure about Eagles star Harley Reid.

Though Brownlow night may have moved their Mad Monday to Wacky Wednesday, that hasn’t stopped the Cats from coming up with some more banger costume ideas.

Ruckman Mark Blicavs has clearly bought into Harleymania rocking the blue & gold No.9 but it was Tanner Bruhn who stole the show leading Blicavs in dressed as football journalist Sam McClure with Max Holmes as Seven’s Mitch Cleary.

Complete with slick back-dyed hair, Bruhn carried a sign stating, “They’re not going to pick him, Mitch.”

Before the draft last season, McClure said on his Tradies podcast with Mitch Cleary that West Coast would not pick Reid because of his desire to remain in Victoria.

“They’re not going to pick him, Mitch. He doesn’t want to go there,” McClure said at the time.

It’s an unfortunate line that has continued to be referenced throughout the year particularly as Reid enjoyed a strong debut season with the Eagles, winning the AFLPA’s Best Young Player award and Goal of the Year.

Star forward Jeremy Cameron brought his own chair to this year’s gathering, coming as Aussie icon Russell Coight.

Others took the opportunity to reference their own sporting heroes with WA’s Lawson Humphries donning Patty Mills’ Boomers guernsey.

In his final Mad Monday for Geelong, Tom Hawkins came as French Olympian Anthony Ammirati, who went viral after knocking over his pole vault bar with his bulge.

Others took inspiration from Hollywood with Brad Close ready to defend the city as Batman while Tom Stewart and Jack Henry came as Talladega Nights duo Ricky Bobby (Will Farrell) and Cal Naughton Jr (John C. Reilly).

Mitch Hardie and Shannon Neale were spot on as Happy Gilmore and his caddy, though Neale’s beard isn’t quite as impressive as when Jimmy Bartel did it in 2016.
