The Vuelta a Espana, Spain's contribution to cycling's grand tours, will start in Italy for the first time next year.

The 90th edition of the race will begin on August 23 in the region of Piedmont, which hosted the first three stages of this year's Giro d'Italia plus a stage of this year's Tour de France, making Turin the second city to host stages of all three Grand Tours.

The first stage will begin in Turin and end in Novara, with the second stage moving to Alba and culminating in a mountain finish at Limone Piemonte.

The third stage will include a climb over the Issiglio Pass and cover the distance between San Maurizio Canavese and Ceres, while the fourth stage will start in Susa before the tour re-enters Spain.

Australian riders had considerable success at the Vuelta in 2024. Ben O'Connor came second in the general classification behind Primoz Roglic after leading for 13 stages, Kaden Groves won the sprinters' points jersey and Jay Vine was King of the Mountains.

The 2025 edition of La Vuelta will mark the sixth time the race starts abroad and the first time it departs from Italy, following Lisbon, Portugal (1997), Assen, Netherlands (2009), Nimes, France (2017), Utrecht, Netherlands (2022) and Lisbon-Oeiras-Cascais, Portugal (2024). Added to this is the already announced official departure from Monaco in 2026.

Italian riders have secured 187 stage wins in the Spanish tour, making Italy the third nation with the most stage victories, after Spain and Belgium. As for the general classification, six Italian cyclists have claimed overall victory: Fabio Aru (2015), Vincenzo Nibali (2010), Marco Giovannetti (1990), Giovanni Battaglin (1981), Felice Gimondi (1968) and Angelo Conterno (1956).
