Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital emergency department redevelopment takes major step forward as pressure builds

Works on the long-awaited redevelopment of the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital emergency department in Nedlands will finally begin next year, as increasing demand on the health facility continues to stretch resources. Four years after the redevelopment of Charlie’s ED was first mooted by the WA Labor Government, tenders have finally been called for the project which is expected to cost around $50 million. With SCGH ED now treating more than 77,000 patients every year, Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson has announced tenders for the redevelopment of the facility are now open, and will close on November 5 — with works expected to begin early in 2025. Her announcement comes amid claims by the WA Liberals that SCGH’s emergency department was at breaking point, operating on some days at “more than 200 per cent capacity”. The emergency department upgrade includes additional beds, a clinical toxicology unit and a separate area for alcohol and drug-related presentations. The redevelopment will also see a “pitstop area” introduced, which will streamline early management for patients who may need to be admitted, including investigations, such as blood tests and scans. The works are planned to be undertaken in multiple stages to minimise the impact on the ED and surrounding facilities. “It is fantastic to see the emergency department expansion progress,” Ms Sanderson said. “We’re investing $49.5 million to expand and future-proof the Charlies’ ED, including additional beds and a new Clinical Toxicology Unit which will provide a separate area for alcohol and other drug-related presentations. “It is complex upgrading a busy ED while keeping it fully operational, but highly detailed planning work is being undertaken to ensure there is no disruption to patient care during the redevelopment.” WA Liberal leader and shadow health minister Libby Mettam, in a statement on Saturday, said the hospital’s emergency department had been in a continuous “code yellow” emergency situation for more than five days this week. She said bed reports showed the 54-bed ED was working at more than 150 per cent capacity and for two days at more than 200 per cent capacity. “Staff are being forced to work in circumstances in which they know they cannot deliver optimal care,” Ms Mettam said. “I have been contacted by staff who say they fear for the safety of their patients.” The State Government is yet to confirm whether a small birthing facility for high risk newborns and their mothers will also be located at Sir Charles Gairdner, to complement a new maternity hospital at Murdoch.
