The Sunday Interview: Hillarys MP Caitlin Collins has 18pc margin but expects tough fight to hold on in 2025

In this regular series, The Sunday Times’ political editor Joe Spagnolo sits down with State MPs and political figures to get the lay of the land ahead of the March State election. This week, we meet Labor MP for Hillarys Caitlin Collins. You were born in Scotland to an Irish mother, Marita, and a Scottish father, Joe, emigrating to Australia with your brother Sean when you were three. What’s something typically Irish that you did growing up? While other people were doing Aussie sports like netball, I was doing competitive Irish dancing throughout all of my primary and high school years. Do you still do Irish dancing? It comes out if I have had a few drinks as my party trick. You’re engaged to Jack, a data engineer. How did you meet? It really was love at first sight for both of us. It’s a modern-age love story. We met on the dating app Bumble. We both swiped right. When is the wedding? Good question. With the pressures of this job I have just kept putting off planning a wedding. I am probably going to have to do a cheeky elopement after the election. We have just had no time to plan it. It will come. I understand you taught English in places like Vietnam and Colombia and in the slums of Varanasi in India in your younger years? I was 19 when I first went to India. These kids had absolutely nothing, but education was what provided them with hope and a ticket out of their situation. I taught English as a second language to students as young as three and as old as 83. From nursery rhymes to the kids in the slums in India to business English to high-flying corporate businessmen in Colombia, and everyone else in between in Vietnam. Did those years have a big influence on you becoming a teacher? Through teaching abroad, I realised that education fundamentally expands the possibilities of opportunity. I wanted every student who came through my classroom to have every opportunity in life available to them. You taught politics and history as a high school teacher before entering politics. Was politics a big part of your life growing up? Politics was always part of my upbringing, even if I didn’t fully realise it at the time. Around the dinner table, Mum shared stories about growing up during the troubles in Northern Ireland, while Dad, who worked offshore in oil and gas, talked about political regimes in far-away countries. Those conversations opened my eyes early on to how much politics shapes everyday life. I went on to study history and politics at the University of Notre Dame and had an amazing opportunity to do a parliamentary internship in Dublin. After unsuccessfully contesting Cottesloe for Labor in 2017 against Colin Barnett, you successfully contested Hillarys, which had been a Liberal seat, in 2021. How did you come to run in Hillarys? Mark McGowan rang me to run in Hillarys. He appreciated the hard work I had put into the Cottesloe campaign in 2017, in what was an unwinnable seat for Labor. It was a real privilege to be approached. Jack and I bought a house in Padbury, and we absolutely love the community. How does Mark McGowan differ from Roger Cook? They’re both brilliant leaders with their own strengths. Roger is open and empathetic. Mark McGowan was straight down the line and pragmatic. Prior to you winning Hillarys it was a Liberal seat for many years. Do you expect Hillarys to feature strongly this election? I think it’s a target seat for both parties. Are you out to prove that Labor winning this seat in 2021 was no fluke? Absolutely. I have given everything to this job these last four years. I truly believe I have done the hard work, but you can’t take anything for granted. I know the Liberals will throw everything at trying to win back this seat. What has been your biggest achievement for the Hillarys electorate? I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved in Hillarys. Whether it’s securing record funding for local schools, supporting community groups or advocating for better services, every day brings the chance to create meaningful change and deliver real results. I’ve loved every second of this job. What haven’t you been able to achieve for Hillarys? We have expanded the CCTV network at Hillarys Boat Harbour and made it a protected entertainment precinct. I have rolled out mobile hoon cameras but I think there is still more to be done in that space. I know the community still has concerns about the noise and disruption that loud cars can cause at night. What’s the No.1 issue in Hillarys this election? Cost of living. The pressures of housing, the cost of renting, the cost of groceries comes up (when I’m doorknocking). Has your Government done enough in addressing the cost of living? I get really good feedback. People say they have taken up all those initiatives that are easing cost-of-living pressures like free zoo passes, or public transport or the WA student payments, and they have appreciated the electricity credits. Every little bit helps. It’s certainly not the be-all and end-all but they (initiatives) can ease the pressure somewhat on the household budget while we wait, hopefully, for interest rates to come down. Is there a further cost-of-living initiative you would like to see introduced? We have free public transport on a Sunday. If we could add another day, it would be great. Do you want to be a minister? It’s not something I have the luxury of thinking about because I have to hold on to my seat. I have an 18 per cent margin, but the Liberals think this is inherently a blue seat. I’d never say never but it’s not something I am thinking about. Two words to describe Roger Cook? Genuine. Experienced. Two words to describe Libby Mettam? Indecisive. Negative. What’s your view on the WA Liberals? Despite the rhetoric that they have reformed and changed, we are still seeing candidates being preselected that don’t represent mainstream views. They haven’t learnt their lesson. They are still quite divided within their own party, so it’s very hard to govern a State if you can’t govern your own party. Your fear for the world? The outcome of the US election is worrying all of us. If Trump is re-elected that could have detrimental impacts that are far reaching beyond the shores of the United States.
