Perth Christmas Day 2024 weather forecast: Temperature predicted to be one of the coolest on record
Perth is in store for one of the coolest Christmas Days in almost three decades.
In its official forecast released on Wednesday, the Bureau of Meteorology predicted a party cloudy day with a slight chance of a shower in Perth with a maximum temperature of 25C and a minimum of 15C.
The mercury has not dipped that low on Christmas Day since 1998 when it reached just 24C.
But while it will be cooler than in previous years, it’s unlikely to deter Kaia Ingram — who celebrated her 3rd birthday at Matilda bay on Wednesday — from returning to her favourite spot for a Christmas Day for dip.
“We will likely be heading back down to the river for Christmas lunch,” Kaia’s dad Nic Ingram said. “For some reason there’s never any crowds but the beach is usually chockers. It’s become our new favourite haunt.”
“It’s a but cooler than usual, but still hot enough to get wet.”
The city’s coldest ever Christmas Day on record was in 1945 when the city experienced a maximum temperature of a chilly 19C.
Light showers can be expected across the south west of the State and temperatures will be hot to very hot in the north and interior part of the State, with thunderstorms expected in some areas.
A sunny top of 31C is forecast for Christmas Eve in Perth, with light winds becoming south-westerly during the morning.
Last year, the maximum temperature on Christmas Day reached a maximum of 36C and 30C in 2022.
In 2021, Perth recorded its hottest Christmas Day, and third-highest December maximum, with 42C, and the second-highest December temperature on Boxing Day with the mercury reaching a steamy 43C.
Perth recorded three consecutive days of 40C from the 23rd of December right up to the big day in 2020, according to the Weather Bureau.
WA Chief Health Officer Andrew Robertson urged the community to take heatwave health warnings and advice seriously as extreme temperatures are expected this summer.
“Extreme heat kills more people in Australia than all other natural disasters combined,” he said.
“And extreme weather events, including heatwaves, are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change – meaning we will see longer, hotter and more intense heatwaves here in WA.’’
He urged people to stay hydrated and seek out somewhere to keep cool during the heat of the day.
