A woman has avoided a Christmas tragedy following a lucky marine rescue after she was swept out to sea in an inflatable boat and eventually rescued about 1km from the famously long Busselton Jetty.

Water Police and Busselton Marine Rescue were alerted to the unfolding situation on Christmas Eve, shortly after 8pm, after receiving reports of a person adrift at sea.

The woman in her 50s had drifted out to sea on a small inflatable boat near the Geographe Bay Yacht Club — near the famed Busselton Jetty.

The RAC rescue helicopter was deployed to help locate the woman before she was found about 1km northeast of the jetty — which is already a staggering 1.8km long, the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere.

Meaning, that the woman on her rogue floatie drifted almost 3km out to sea.

She was found and boarded a rescue vessel where it’s believed she was treated for hypothermia, before being taken to Busselton Health Campus by ambulance for further assessment.

Busselton Marine Rescue chronicled the ordeal via its Facebook page on Monday morning, thanking first responders for helping avoid tragedy this holiday season.

“A great result & big thank you for the first responders & police for their efforts in bringing what could have been a tragic outcome to a successful conclusion,” the post read.
