Mobile phone coverage is expected to improve in the region after the announcement of a site for a new mobile phone tower in Wilyabrup.

The tower will be built on the property of outgoing liberal MLC Barry House and will be funded under the State Government's $45 million investment in the Regional Telecommunications Project.

Vasse MLA Libby Mettam said Wilyabrup had been identified as a priority site for a mobile phone tower.

"Finding the right location for these towers is often the biggest challenge and the location in Wilyabrup will add to recent State and Commonwealth commitments for new mobile coverage in Rosa Glen, Baudin, Rosa Brook and Yallingup East," she said.

"First and foremost, the new mobile tower will bring a high level of safety and security for people in this area.

"I believe good mobile coverage is crucial to doing business better and addressing emergency situations."

The region's bad coverage was brought to the spotlight once again last month after a Capel man was fatally injured while hang-gliding in Wilyabrup and the teenager who found him was unable to call for help because of poor reception.

MLC Barry House said mobile phone reception in the area was very poor.

"There was an exhaustive exploration process by Telstra and it seems everyone else had rejected the tower," he said.

"The site on my property was suitable and I was happy to accept the proposal on the basis I was treated the same as any other land holder.

"Mobile phone reception is an issue in the area and it urgently needs to be addressed."
