Alcohol affects more people than just those consuming it - that's the message Georgiana Molloy Anglican School Year 8 students Ella Young and Shae Higham took to the Students Advising Youth competition last week.

Ella and Shae, the youngest entrants in the competition, which featured mostly Year 11 and 12 students, filmed and edited a video showing the effects of alcohol, not only on the people who drank it, but on those around them as well.

The WA Police competition called on students to become "community safety champions" and research problems with alcohol for their films.

Ella said she heard about the project in media club and was interested in following it up.

"The whole point we did it was the message at the end of the movie - alcohol doesn't just affect you, it affects people you live with as well," she said.

Shae and Ella researched the financial implications of alcohol, which was also highlighted in the movie.

Although the students didn't take out the top prize at the SAY competition, they still went home with trophies and about $250.

Ella said she enjoyed filming and editing the movie and wanted to learn more about media and production.
