Students buckle up for pedal-powered challenge
MacKillop Catholic College students will take part in the RAC Pedal Prix for the second straight year after the inaugural event in Busselton last year.
The event, which first started in South Australia 30 years ago, gives students a chance to build human-powered vehicles and race them.
This year 47 students will take part in the five-race series run by the Australian International Pedal Prix.
MacKillop Catholic College teaching and learning co-ordinator Wayne Cowie said he believed the event was great for students.
He said after a meeting about the event he felt the school needed to be involved.
"The students involved in last year's race thought the event was awesome and many are participating again this year," he said.
"They enjoyed the competitive side of the race, however, the camaraderie between students of different ages was a highlight."
The event has been supported by the City of Busselton, which has committed to a two-year agreement to keep the event going.
Mr Cowie said the students were excited to be involved again.
"This year we are racing four trikes, three in the junior category, including an all-girl team, and one in the senior team," he said. "The school P and F has been invaluable in helping fund the event over the past two years, along with fees and fundraising provided by the students and parents of the school."
The RAC Pedal Prix Race will be on August 9 at the Busselton foreshore, kicking off at 10am.
