Mural to aid dementia care

Volunteers have pitched in to brighten up the walls at the Baptistcare William Carey Court aged-care facility.

The effort was part of the organisation's Dementia Enrichment Project to improve the lives of residents with dementia.

Susan North, Lynette Barry, Robyn Taylor and Sandy Mills from the Frangipani Art Group worked with the centre and its lifestyle co-ordinator Roslyn McDonald to design and paint a mural on a wall at the William Carey Court facility.

The walls were prepared by Bunnings staff and Dulux donated the paint. Baptistcare's Paula Rogers said dementia patients required stimulating environments to live in to achieve the best treatment results.

Ms Rogers said the colourful mural would have a significant impact on the residents' lives.

"Colourful images are really important for people suffering in this way," she said. "It's a lovely initiative that people from the community have joined in and collectively done something that will have an impact on people's lives."

The mural was finished this week.
