A Margaret River man who failed to comply with police after holding an out-of-control house party has been fined more than $12,000.

Aaron Joe Hughes, 25, pleaded guilty in Busselton Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to failing to comply with a noise abatement notice.

At 10.40pm on December 27 last year, police were called to a house in Margaret River after receiving complaints about a noisy party.

Prosecuting officer Sergeant John Mawson said Hughes was given a noise abatement notice and told he had to turn the music down.

He said police told Hughes he was in breach of section 81 of the Environmental Protection Act and would be subject to a $5000 fine if he did not comply with police orders.

He said Hughes abused police and refused to obey orders, and encouraged more than 150 party-goers to make more noise.

At 2.30am on December 28 last year, police returned to the house and closed the party.

Hughes told the court he was embarrassed and regretted his behaviour towards police.

He said the party was not out of control and guests were well behaved.

He said he had learnt a lot from the experience and was looking forward to putting it behind him.

Magistrate Kelvin Fisher said Hughes was non-compliant with police for a significant amount of time and prevented the officers from doing their job.

He said Hughes had pleaded guilty only after a significant amount of time.

Magistrate Fisher said Hughes' record was not without blemish and it was not the first time he had not complied with police.

He said penalties under section 81 of the Environment Protection Act made reference to a $25,000 penalty and the fine should reflect the seriousness of the offence.

He was fined $12,500 and ordered to pay $150.80 costs.
