Majid Jamshidi Doukoshkan released from prison on bail as Girrawheen couple Ninette and Philip live in fear

A former immigration detainee who caused national outrage when he allegedly bashed an elderly couple in their Girrawheen home has been released from prison while his alleged victims live behind bars of their own. Ninette and Philip Simons have fortified their property, building a giant spiked fence around the entirety of their home. A second barrier protects their front door, while CCTV cameras and roller doors on their windows have also been installed. They say they continue to live in fear after they were brutally attacked and robbed in April last year. On Thursday, one of the men allegedly involved in the home invasion — Majid Jamshidi Doukoshkan — was released from prison on home detention bail. As part of his release, the 44-year-old Iranian refugee, who was one of the non-citizens released into the community after the High Court ruled indefinite detention was unlawful in 2023, will have to wear an ankle bracelet. He is also banned from consuming drugs or alcohol and has surrendered his passport. Prosecutors did not oppose home detention bail. Ms Simons, 74, said she was “appalled” by the court’s decision. “This is shocking . . . it feels like no one cares,” she told 7NEWS. “We can’t live our lives the way we had planned. “I’m scared to even go out in the front yard.” Even her kids and grandchildren are scared to visit her property, Ms Simons said. Mr Doukoshkan, who denies the allegations, is one of four people charged over the home invasion, along with Joel Painter, Seyed Younes Tahami and Emmy Signo, who is accused of being the getaway driver. “If they (the accused) put themselves in our shoes, if it was any of their relatives, how would they feel?” Ms Simons said. Police allege the group posed as police officers to gain entry into the Simons’ Girrawheen home before stealing about $200,000 in gold jewellery. The grandmother was allegedly punched unconscious onto the tile floor and had a necklace torn off her, while her husband was pushed to the ground face first, then had his hands bound by cables. A shocking image of her bloodied and swollen face was released with the couple’s permission by WA Police as they investigated the attack. Ms Signo, 49, was charged with aggravated home burglary, aggravated robbery and impersonating a public officer for her alleged part in the theft. She has pleaded not guilty to the offences. Co-accused Mr Painter, 36, is yet to enter pleas and remains behind bars. Seyed Younes Tahami, 39, has also not entered pleas and is currently on bail, due back in court on May 2.
