Decisions not dictated by polls: mayor
City of Busselton Mayor Ian Stubbs says councillors have been voting with the belief that they are acting in the best interests of all residents after taking into consideration recent issues.
Cr Stubbs told the Times the City was proud of its governance processes which he said had stood in the face of criticism following debates, some heated, on public issues including dog beaches and the demolition of the Nautical Lady.
He said the council had shown in recent dealings that it would not be swayed by "small pressure groups", which he said he believed was a sign of a strong council.
"Many of the council critics of late are the same persons that have criticised the council over many years for just about everything the council does," he said.
"I am certain most of the public recognise the names and ignore their comments.
"Some of the recent criticisms have come from other people and provided it is accurate and constructive I think it can only do good for our local government."
Following recent letters published in local newspapers about council elections in October, Cr Stubbs said he could assure readers the council did not make decisions with elections in mind.
"If the issue of the elections comes up in our discussions, I stop it in its tracks," he said.
"The electors will elect who they believe will best serve the whole district.
"If they are not happy with the existing councillors, they can vote others to take their places.
"I believe that most of the electors are very astute people. They will look at what has been done such as the redevelopment of the foreshores at Busselton and Dunsborough, the CBD upgrades, the new sporting and recreation facilities, the road upgrades, the airport and the many other achievements of this council.
"If the electors don't like all this, they will vote for someone else."
Cr Stubbs said he didn't believe many of the electors come October would be swayed by the Nautical Lady and the dog beach issues.
