The Geographe Catchment, from scarp to sea, has been realised in the form of a mural in the Busselton town centre.

Artist Jerome Davenport worked with GeoCatch, the City of Busselton Youth Services Team and young residents to develop the concept for the mural, which features the different areas of the catchment, including the forest, farming land, wetlands, urban area and ocean.

GeoCatch commissioned the mural - on the wall in the Woolworth's carpark, adjacent to the GeoCatch office on Duchess Street - with the intent to create urban art the community would be able to react to and associate the relationships between the catchment, waterways and the bay.

Davenport told the Times while as with many other pieces, the mural was overwhelming to start with, the momentum flowed once the project had begun.

The artist said about 20 to 30 people a day came up to watch and talk to him while he was creating the mural.

"I think it will be a good starting point for a lot more (urban art) in the future," he said.

GeoCatch business manager Danielle Mussell said the idea was developed by the GeoCatch team as a way to communicate the environmental values of the area to the community.

"We hope the mural will not only brighten up the CBD, but convey to the local community and visitors to town where Busselton sits in the catchment landscape, how it has been developed around the coast and wetlands to get a sense of connection between activities on the land and Geographe Bay," she said.

Busselton youth were also instrumental in developing the mural, working with the City's Youth Services Team to workshop ideas for the piece.
