White Ribbon funds help refuge

Money raised from an awareness event held on White Ribbon Day last year has been donated to a local refuge for victims of domestic violence.

Organisations including the Busselton Family Centre, Hearing Voices, South West Counselling, Relationships Australia and Tuart House came together to host a White Ribbon display in Fig Tree Lane in November.

The event aimed to raise awareness and encourage discussion about violence against women and the $513 raised on the day was donated to Tuart House last Friday.

South West Counselling project officer Bev Atkinson said she was very happy with the community support.

“We raised that amount in one day and it was all from members of the public,” she said.

“We went out to hand out white ribbons and information flyers and people voluntarily went up to the tins we had and donated.”

The event was supported by Jigsaw Print and a $500 grant from McDonald's licensee John Frankham.

Students and staff at Busselton Senior High School also came together on the day to donate.

Tuart House co-ordinator Wendy Oliver said the donation would be helpful to the refuge.

“It’s been brilliant,” she said.

“The money will go towards a range of things the women and children need.”
