Bad weather is on its way to the South West, with the Bureau of Meteorology says thunderstorms and showers may bring 100km/h winds damage homes and property.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued the following advice to residents:

Store or weigh down loose objects around homes like outdoor furniture, which could be picked up and thrown by strong winds.

Ensure emergency kits are complete, including a battery operated radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit.

Make sure pets and animals are in a safe area and move vehicles under cover.

If you are away from home, contact family or friends to prepare your property.

Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones if there is lightning.

Construction site workers should store loose building material and tie down sheds.

Boat owners should securely moor their boats and campers should find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams.

If driving, slow down, turn your lights on and keep a safe distance from other drivers.

If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears.

Take care in areas that have been flooded and do not drive into water of unknown depth and current.

Be careful on gravel roads as surfaces will be slippery and muddy, and vehicles could become bogged.

If your home has been badly damaged call the State Emergency Service on 132 500.
