Triathlon: Housemates off to Hawaii

NATALIE BROWNBusselton Dunsborough Times

Two Busselton triathletes will become the town’s first representatives on the notorious Hawaii Ironman track next month.

Training sessions in hooded sweatshirts have been the daily drill for seasoned triathlete Steve Anstee and newcomer Chloe Lane as they prepare to tackle hot and humid conditions at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii on October 8.

The pair qualified for the triathlon on home turf in December last year when they finished in the top few of their age divisions.

Lane finished first in her 18 to 24 age division to qualify with 12hr 48m 12s in her debut Ironman.

Anstee finished fourth in his division with 9hr 11m 50s in his fourth Ironman last year.

The pair are housemates and have been spurring each other on during training sessions with fellow Ironman Mick Bray.

Anstee said the event would be a learning curve with very testing conditions.

“Hawaii’s like the toughest race in the world.

“You mention it to people and there’s this respect that comes with it,” the 29-year-old said.

At 21, Lane will be the youngest Australian athlete in the event and said she was excited for the challenge.

The Hawaii World Championship includes a 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42km run.
