An English tourist had his hire car impounded last week after he was allegedly caught driving 120km/h in a 70km/h zone on Bussell Highway.

Busselton police were conducting roadside speed checks abuot midday on Thursday when the man, who was driving a Hyundai hatchback, was spotted and later charged with reckless driving, with his hire car seized and impounded for 28 days.

Senior Sergeant Steve Principe told the Times the man was doing "warp speed" along the road and said he was allegedly confused because he believed he was on the "motorway".

Snr Sgt Principe said the driver could face a $1000 fee to get the car back, as well as a further fine.

He said it was important for tourists to understand Australia's road rules and said it was an important message for everyone to slow down and enjoy the ride.

The man, who was staying in Margaret River, will appear in Busselton's Magistrates Court tomorrow.
