Yelverton resident Sam Fleming has reason to celebrate after being named Dux of Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School last week.

The Year 12 graduate, who has travelled to Bunbury daily for the past five years, picked up prizes for Physics, Chemistry, Maths 3C/D and Maths Specialist 3C/D.

He was also the recipient of the Edith Cowan University personal excellence award, presented to the student who shows strong academic endeavour and a commitment to integrity, respect, rational enquiry and personal excellence.

Sam, who was captain of Redding House at BCGS, said he had not done anything special to achieve the awards.

“I’m just lucky, I guess,” he said.

The modest student said concentrating in class and studying for a couple of hours a night helped him throughout the year.

Playing football and living at his family’s Wonky Windmill Farm also provided distractions and stopped him from getting too stressed, he said.

He wants to study physical sciences at UWA next year and was aiming for the highest possible ATAR score of 99.95.

“That’s what I’m hoping for, but I should get above 99,” he said.

Other duxes honoured from the region were Lillian van der Veen from Cornerstone Christian College, Andrew Longman from MacKillop Catholic College, Zachary Carter from Georgiana Molloy Anglican School and Kane Baker from the Busselton Senior High School.
