Teens raise cash for shelter
A local wildlife shelter has been named the first recipient of the funds raised from a Dunsborough business’ community bookshelf initiative.
Seventeen-year-old Lauren Balfour and Sarah Borig from Hot Chocolatte have raised more than $1000 for the Waalbiirniny Wildlife Shelter.
Lauren told the Times they wanted to start their own fundraising project, as other store employees have run a number of fundraisers for local community groups.
The fundraiser sees customers donating books which other people can purchase for a donation.
“Every three months we will collect the donations for a different community group,” Ms Balfour said.
“This was our first three months, and the amount of money completely exceeded our expectations. We were only expecting a few hundred dollars.”
As an animal lover, she said picking Waalbiirniny as the recipient was an easy choice.
Lauren said the fundraiser would be held year-round and people were welcome to drop by the store to donate or purchase a book.
