A community-based organisation is launching a project to encourage beautiful, low-maintenance gardens which are also good for the environment.

GeoCatch’s Bay OK Gardens project uses sustainable gardening principles to create healthy gardens which can provide a refuge for native animals, support biodiversity and help to control water run-off and nutrient leaching.

The project will start with community workshops supported by a guide and online material.

GeoCatch officers will then work personally with residents who live adjacent to Busselton’s urban wetlands to help them create a Bay OK Garden and reduce any undesired impacts on nearby waterways and the environment.

Over the coming weeks, GeoCatch officer Lisa Massey will invite homeowners to participate in a free personalised garden assessment.

This will be followed up by a workshop with sustainable gardening guru Josh Byrne, who is a celebrity presenter on Gardening Australia.

Residents living next to the Vasse River and Vasse-Wonnerup Estuary should look out for their postcard invitation to take part in the project.

To register, call Ms Massey on 9781 0111 or email geocatch@water.wa.gov.au.

Other residents can keep up to date with the workshops by subscribing to GeoCatch’s mailing list or following GeoCatch on Facebook.
