Surf's up for Yallingup festival
The 2012 Yallingup Surfilm Festival will be launched at Caves House on Friday, March 25.
The evening will feature a WA premiere screening of Stoked and Broke and Just Add Water.
Festival director Jesca Maas said the launch was to let the community know the event would be on again in January 2012 and films could be submitted to organisers between April 1 and October 1.
“We are looking for sponsors and involvement as it’s a community festival,” she said.
“A new exciting, spectacular, scenic venue will be announced at the launch.”
The Yallingup Surfilm Festival was first held in January 2010 to create a meeting place for the wider surf community and to further inspire exploration into surf culture.
Ms Maas said the launch would raise awareness and funds for the Disabled Surfers Association of WA, a not-for-profit organisation which gave people with varying disabilities the opportunity to have a safe and happy surfing experience.
“They are in great need of a new trailer,” she said.
The film Stocked and Broke follows the journey of surfers Ryan Burch and Cyrus Sutton as they set off on a 30-mile, eight-day walk through San Diego, USA.
But what started as a guide to taking a minimalist surfing journey quickly becomes an examination of freedom versus alienation.
Just Add Water is about Clay Marzo.
A member of Quiksilver’s elite Young Guns crew, Marzo’s spontaneous, unpredictable and creative style has earned him three National Scholastic Surfing Association surfing titles and video spots in some of the biggest surf movies around.
Ms Maas said a focus of the Surfilm festival was raising social and environmental awareness.
Tickets are $22 and available online from www.yallingupsurfilm.com.au or $25 at the door.
The event starts at 7.15pm at Caves House.
