Surfing: Mainbreak could host Stand Up

Busselton Dunsborough Times

Yallingup Mainbreak could host a Stand Up Paddle Board World Tour event later this year if Busselton Shire Council approve and support a Surfing WA bid for the event.

If successful, Yallingup would be the only destination in WA to host one of the international fixtures and one of only two in Australia.

Established in 2009 to address the exponential growth in the sport, the tour was said to now reach 170 television networks in 220 countries worldwide and attract a live audience of up to 25,000 at a time.

Council events coordinator Tanya Gillett said it was a great opportunity to be part of a growing sport and hoped it would become an annual event.

Councillor Don Hanran-Smith expressed concern over whether the surf would be closed for the event, but Ms Gillett said that was yet to be confirmed.
