Support for FIFO workers, spouses
A new support group for spouses in fly-in, fly-out relationships has been launched by Dunsborough resident Sharon Cousins.
Mrs Cousins told the Times she decided to organise the group as she had heard of a lot of people battling with the issues of being in a FIFO relationship.
“Many of these relationships break up under the pressure, and there is a big need for support,” she said.
“It is hard to adjust to the man leaving, and then coming home after a period of time, and getting involved with the family only to leave again.”
Phillipa Idziak, who has been in a FIFO marriage for more than 30 years, had volunteered to speak to the women at the group’s first meeting.
“There wasn’t much support available when my children were young, as it (FIFO marriages) wasn’t heard of back then,” Mrs Idziak said.
“I think having this group is great…and I hope someone will be able to learn something from my experiences.”
Mrs Idziak said it was also important for women in a FIFO relationship to learn to provide support for their spouses as well.
“It’s tough on the men as well, and they need to be really disciplined to take on this job,” she said.
Mrs Cousins said she would be inviting guest speakers to talk on a range of issues at these meetings, and hoped the group would become a monthly social gathering for the women.
The group’s next meet on February 4 at the Naturaliste Community Centre at 1.30pm.
