Summer festival spirit revival
The iconic Busselton spirit will reemerge for the 50th Festival of Busselton next summer.
After being notably absent from this year’s event after the retirement of Vince Triglia, who built the effigy for 35 years, the festival committee is thrilled local artist Mark Everson volunteered to create a new version.
The burning of the spirit has been synonymous with the start of the closing night fireworks from Busselton Jetty throughout festival history.
Everson said he had thought about getting involved for the past four years and was honoured to work on his most significant project to date.
As resident artist at the Busselton Visitor Centre, he admitted he had a few ideas, though remained tight lipped on the actual design and format at this stage.
The community can expect something different, with the aim being to marry together elements such as the surrounding water and forests.
“I’ve always been interested in something three-dimensional and big,” Everson said.
“It’s the 50th anniversary so it’s really got to show Busselton — it’s quite a big responsibility.
“I do want to be a bit out there but the most important thing is I want it to be fun and I want the kids to smile.”
Festival president Bernie Masters said Everson had been given license for his “artistic imagination to run wild”.
Mr Masters said in conjunction with attempts to reinvigorate the Young ambassador competition, Everson’s spirit should ensure the 2014 festival was an exciting birthday party.
