Students walk for a cause
Busselton Senior High School has raised more than $3000 during their second annual Tenderfeet walk.
Students from the school walked last week to raise money for a school in Kibera, a slum in Africa.
Once the walk was completed, a variety of entertainment was on show including a drumming beat exhibition and Aboriginal dancers.
Teacher Geoff Holt said the school has raised in excess of $7000 over the past two years.
“It’s a pretty good effort by the students,” he said.
Mr Holt said the event tied in with the curriculum by teaching the students to become global citizens and have an understanding of global inequality.
“It’s a real eye-opener for our kids,” he said.
Busselton Senior High School parent and Tenderfeet Australia chairman Craig Garratt said since the school had become involved with the organisation eight years ago the students had embraced the program.
“The kids learn about how lucky they are and also learn empathy,” he said.
Mr Garratt said the students at Busselton learnt Swahili and exchanged letters with the students at the Tenderfeet school which helped them form a greater connection.
School captain Paddo Donovan said the event helped to educate students at the school.
“It gives students a global awareness,” he said. “They’re part of a global community helping each other.”
