A Georgiana Molloy Anglican School student has been awarded the gold level Duke of Edinburgh award, a first for the school.

The Duke of Edinburgh award involves young people aged between 14 and 24 participating in a range of activities and is about personal development.

Year 12 student Regan O’Callaghan said she decided to undertake the challenge after her sister did it and she also wanted to challenge herself.

“I have the theory that anything is possible and I like to prove that to myself,” she said. Gaining the award involved five components: skill; service; physical recreation; adventurous journey; and a residential project.

Regan chose what she wanted to do based on her interests, completing her Certificate IV in Vet Nursing, competing in the Relay for Life and acting as a FAWNA carer.

She also did water polo and horse riding, spent a week on the STS Leeuwin II and was part of the 16-and-under water polo club nationals. Regan was also recently told the award would be an advantage when later applying for jobs.

“I would definitely recommend others to apply and take part,” she said.
