Stirring songs from Harmony Choir

Songs of love and war will be the theme of the Cape Harmony Choir concert in Dunsborough on May 5.

The 35-member mixed choir will sing a bracket of songs from World War I and II and a few love songs to balance out two aspects of what it is to be human — making love and making war.

The war songs include the beautiful but sad “Willie has gone to the war” by the American composer Stephen Foster, We’ll Meet Again, and the powerful Va Pensiero, the chorus of Hebrew slaves from Verdi’s “Nabucco”.

Love songs include A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, made famous by Manhattan Transfer, and a bracket of songs by Irving Berlin.

The choir will be directed by baritone Cornelius de Munck, who will be one of the principal soloists, with other soloists including soprano Janet Depiazzi, alto Terry Herd and tenor Murray Mills.

Young musicians from Needing Cherie will perform two brackets of songs.

Teenagers Rohan Disley, a baritone, and Jake Bigwood, a bass, will accompany the choir.

Each of them will sing small solo parts in the final item, from Les Miserables.

The concert will be held at Our Lady of the Cape Primary School at 2pm. Refreshments will be provided.

Tickets cost $15 and are available at Callows Newsagency in Busselton, Sea Change Newsagency in Dunsborough and from choir members.
