Sky's the limit for Jacob's javelin

Jacob Msando is just 13 years old, but he is already big news in the competitive world of javelin throwing.

The Busselton athlete returned from the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Perth last weekend with a gold medal.

“I was head-to-head with this kid from NSW and I needed to throw over 45m and I did it,” Jacob said.

“The crowd helped me throw my best. You seem to throw further when people are watching and the pressure is on.”

Jacob threw 45.25m, rounding off a whirlwind weekend in which he also smashed the Bunbury Little Athletics Club record with a 43.73m throw.

For the down-to-earth teenager — who says his first love is footy, followed by athletics — it’s all in a day’s work.

“I’m going for the State record next, which is 49m,” he said.

“I like javelin throwing because it’s fun to watch and easy to learn.”

While Jacob may not be fazed by his recent success, proud mum Tracy Farrar couldn’t be happier.

“I don’t know who he gets it from,” she said.

“He’s smaller than a lot of the other competitors but he throws further.

“It was awesome to see him break the record — I just burst into tears.”

Mrs Farrar said the family owed a lot to Jacob’s coach, Bruce Cornish, who had spent a lot of time and energy training the young sports star.
