The new Busselton skate park will be officially opened on Sunday, paving the way for national-level competitions in the region.

The $1.35 million precinct has been more than four years in the making and offers some of the best skating facilities in WA.

Mayor Grant Henley said the skate park was a fantastic facility for young people and families.

"It will provide somewhere for the kids to socialise and keep active. It's a competition-level facility and we have already lined-up future skating events, which will bring people into the City," he said.

"As well as the obvious social benefits, the skate park will be a significant drawcard for the region and we expect to see real economic returns."

The park was vandalised last month during a sneak-peek opening, forcing the City to put fences back up.

Cr Henley said the response to the new skate park had been positive and said he hoped it would be looked after in the future.

"We hope they appreciate what's been created here especially for them," he said.

"The park will offer one of the largest bowls in WA at 18m long, 10m wide and 3m deep, making it suitable for competitions.

"There is also kerbing, parking block ledges, skate rails and a small quarter pipe to create a range of challenges to young skaters."

Skater and Soggybones co- owner Luke Ward said the facility would put Busselton on the map.

"This park will put Busselton on a national and international competition level and we've never had that before," he said. "It's going to put surfing and skating on a level playing field in the South West and I've waited my whole life for that."

The skate park opening will start from 10am this Sunday.
