Fisheries officers set free a 2m shark which was caught on a fishing line 200m off the coast of Dunsborough yesterday.

The Department was alerted after the Surf Life Saving WA rescue helicopter spotted the bronze whaler shark at 1.30pm.

At first it was thought the shark was tangled in a mooring rope near Point Dalling, but a Fisheries spokeswoman confirmed this was not the case.

“It appears someone had set a line to try to catch a shark,” she said.

“We’re not very happy about it, but fortunately the officers were able to set the shark free and it swam off.”

A Fisheries vessel on its way from Margaret River but the shark was freed before the boat arrived at the scene.
