Service to remember Korean vets

Busselton Dunsborough Times

The Busselton Returned and Services League will commemorate the so-called forgotten war with a special service for Korean Veterans Day on Sunday.

The event marks the 61st anniversary of the cessation of hostilities and the beginning of a truce that has endured until today.

When the communist Chinese and North Korean forces invaded South Korea in 1950, Australian servicemen based in Japan were among the earliest to respond in the first operation under the auspices of the newly formed United Nations.

This saw three years of tough fighting, resulting in the loss of more than 300 Australian lives.

Sunday’s service will be at Busselton War Memorial at 10am.

Young RSL member Josh Strahan will wear the medals of Busselton Korean veteran Kevin Riseley.

Busselton Mayor Ian Stubbs will also wear medals on behalf of his father, who served in the conflict.
