The July winner of the Rising Sports Star has already made the Souwest Jets State League netball team and State schoolgirls 15s side this year.

Busselton-born Ashton Embry started playing netball at eight years old.

“I’ve always had a passion for netball and have wanted to just try to succeed and take it as far as I can, ” she said.

“I would love to one day play for West Coast Fever and ultimately the Australian Diamonds.”

The MacKillop Catholic College Year 10 student started playing in the Busselton Netball Association and was coached by her mother.

In 2012, she was selected for the South West Academy Team and played in the Academy Cup carnival in Perth.

From the carnival, she was picked for the Academy All-Stars team, which comprises one girl from each of the 12 academy teams.

Last year, Ashton was again the South West Academy Team representative and, after the Academy Cup carnival, she was invited to join the Fever in the State Academy Program and has been selected in the State 17s squad.

Ashton received a South West Academy of Sport Scholarship that year and was then selected to the Souwest Jets State League netball team for the 2014 season.

This year, Ashton was one of 12 girls selected for the State schoolgirls 15s netball team and travelled to Melbourne for the School Sport Australia Netball Championships, in which WA finished fourth.

“When I played State, I was in wing attack,” she said.

“Leading up to that I used to be in goal attack as a shooter. Now I pick wing attack because I’m not tall enough to be a shooter.”

Ashton also plays locally for Aces Netball Club in the A-grade competition and for Busselton Magpies in the Busselton Netball-Football League.

The Rising Sports Star awards are supported by the Times.
