Riley reels in 10.2kg whopper

ROB NAILBusselton Dunsborough Times

Riley Nail, 11, was fishing with his dad and friends in Geographe Bay during the school holidays.

While the adults were chasing pink snapper but catching a few samson fish, Riley decided to float a small rig down the berley trail hoping to catch a skippy.

Shortly afterwards Riley hooked on to something solid and, after 10 minutes, the consensus was Riley had hooked a small sambo.

After another 10 minutes the adults were getting a little sick of Riley’s “small sambo” doing circles around the boat and getting in the way.

When Riley finally got the fish to the surface, all on board were very excited to see a 10.2kg pink snapper.

The landing net broke as the fish was hauled on board with much celebration.

Everyone except an exhausted Riley could not believe the fish was caught on small rig with two size-six hooks usually used for chasing whiting.
