Police get tough for long weekend
Busselton police are warning drivers about double demerit points over the Easter long weekend.
Motorists caught using mobile phones and running red traffic lights will incur tougher penalties.
Busselton Senior Sergeant Steve Principe said his officers were prepared for an influx of people.
“Our priority is to prevent serious crashes and fatalities and we will do whatever is necessary, ” he said.
“We don’t want people’s holidays to be ruined, or their lives and the lives of others for that matter.
“I encourage people to abide by the speed limit, don’t drink and drive and make sure you wear a seatbelt.”
Double demerit penalties will now apply to motorists caught using a mobile phone while driving and red light traffic breaches during holiday periods.
The stiffer penalties will be enforced by WA Police between April 17 and 21 and from April 24 and 27.
