Petanque players from across WA are gearing up to head south for the weekend’s South West Petanque Championship at Whicher Ridge Wines.

Registrations are still open for the second championship, in which about 90 players from Bunbury, Busselton, and other parts of the South West and WA will come together on Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13 for a weekend of wine and competition at Whicher Ridge’s petanque facility.

More than $1000 in cash and prizes are at stake and part-proceeds of the championship, along with money raised on the day, will be donated to the Leukaemia Foundation.

For the second year, Southwest Renault is co-sponsoring the event.

Dealer principal Paul Diggins said the sport fitted in with the car maker’s motto “passion for life”.

“It’s a nice way to spend the weekend,” he said.

Whicher Ridge Wines’ Cathy Howard said one of the attractions of petanque — a game similar to Italian bocce and first played in Provence, France — was that athleticism wasn’t critical to success.

“You don’t have to be good at sports to play it,” she said.

Registrations close next November 9 and the registration fee is $20 per player for the weekend.
