Three Capes region musicians are launching a jazz trio with vocals, piano and electric double bass.

Dunsborough-based vocalist Charmaine Clements said the stars had aligned for the collaboration, with the Jazz by the Bay festival starting last year in her home town.

Clements was introduced to pianist Mark Sadler and bassist Kevin McDonald through mutual friends, and the trio will hold their first performance on Saturday, August 30.

“It’s perfect timing, ” Clements said.

“I moved down here four and a half years ago and never really stopped singing. The opportunity just presented itself.”

Clements studied at the Australian Ballet School before graduating from the WA Academy of Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre.

Her professional theatre credits include Cats, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, Grease — the Arena Spectacular, The Secret Garden, Romeo and Juliet, and Company for the Melbourne Theatre Company.

She was also a member of the Green Room Australian cabaret trio Combo Fiasco before settling in Dunsborough with her young family.

Dunsborough-based Sadler studied classical piano in Boston before continuing his studies at WAAPA and gaining his BMus Ed at the University of WA.

He has accompanied the WA Ballet Company and supported Diana Krall at the Leeuwin Concert.

McDonald, who is originally from Vancouver, received a performance degree and diploma in classical guitar from Boston’s Berklee College of Music.

He now lives in Augusta, and has played with Sarah Vaughn and Archie McDonald.

More recently, McDonald has appeared in the opening acts at the Leeuwin Estate concerts for Diana Krall and Carole King.

The trio will have their inaugural performance at a Wine and Jazz night at Piari and Co on August 30.

They plan to record a jazz album locally in the coming months.
