Paterson too good in King of the Point

Busselton Dunsborough Times

Yallingup surfers dominated the male and female divisions of the Kailis’ King of the Point competition, held in Perth at the weekend.

Competitors were greeted with clean sets on the final day of the competition, held at Trigg Point.

Yallingup’s Jay Davies put on a good show against his counterparts in the semi-final but was unable to match the power and style of former ASP World Tour competitor Jake Paterson, from Yallingup, and Dunsborough’s Tom Innes who battled it out in the man-on-man final.

Despite a south-westerly change creating some unwanted lump and bump on the waves, Paterson powered through the afternoon conditions to prove he was still a dominant force in competitive surfing.

Paterson started the final making it known that he intended to win with big outside manoeuvres followed by solid finishing turns.

Innes replied with just as much conviction but was unable to find the required score to challenge for the win.

In the end it was Paterson’s wave selection and powerful surfing that led him to the throne and crowned the 2013 King of the Point ahead of a gallant Innes.

“I’m originally from Cottesloe and growing up as a kid this competition was the biggest thing ever,” he said.

“I’m thrilled to see the event return and to join a list of guys that have won here means a lot to me. Thanks to everyone who has made it possible.”

Paterson also finished second in the over-30 masters division, with fellow Yallingup surfer Ryan Wordsworth in fourth.

In the Queen of the Point division, former ASP World Tour competitor Claire Bevilacqua (Yallingup) dominated, using her past win at the event and competition experience.
