New coach aiming high

Despite having a relatively young side, new Busselton Football Club colts coach Peter Plozza says the team would be challenging for the flag this season.

The side finished fourth last year after losing the first game of the finals season.

Plozza told the Times he had been really keen to take on the role this season after helping out with the side last year.

He said being a colts coach was important because the competition was a stepping stone for developing players for senior ranks.

Plozza knows the players well, having coached the under-16s to the grand final in 2011.

Most who were in this team now play colts.

“I’ve coached them through juniors and the under-15s so I’m pretty familiar with some of the players,” he said.

“We want to really push for the grand final this year.

“The side lost a few close games that they shouldn’t have lost last season, which stopped them from getting further.”

Plozza said the young players hadclub scratch matches and had acquitted themselves well against the league players.

“More or less, we have the same game plan as last year, just with a bit of fine tuning,” he said.

“We have got a very good midfield.”

Among the standout players identified by the coach are Ben Rickwood, who was named captain this month, Kobe Howell, Logan Whitewell, Brodie Cozza, brothers Joel and Ben Avery and Zac Austin.

Plozza said they also had Brayden Hoskins as their main ruckman and the club was trying to develop him so he can also play at a league level.
