Mulies take premiership

RYAN JOHNSONBusselton Dunsborough Times

The Mulies have won their 11th straight premiership after an enthralling battle in howling conditions against the Kakkas on Saturday.

The win was a poignant moment for the Mulies, with Cam Maguire playing perhaps his final game of football.

The game was played at one end, with a strong wind blowing down the ground making scoring near impossible for the team facing into the breeze.

The gallant Kakkas led by five points at three-quarter time, but the experienced Mulies kicked away in the final quarter, winning the game 10.7 (67) to 6.11 (47).

“It wasn’t the best conditions for football,” Mulies coach Trent Kelly said.

“Ninety five per cent of the game was played at one end.”

Kelly said the game was won when the Mulies restricted their opponents’ scoring opportunities in the third quarter.

“The guys knew they were in a battle,” he said.

“The Mulies’ legacy is large and proud. The boys listened well, held their structures and came out on top. It took a lot of character.”

Players from the Busselton Football Cub and the Nannup Tigers joined the spectators braving the conditions to support the two teams.

Mulies captain Mick Sherry was the umpire’s best on ground, capping of a terrific season.

Kelly said Mick Vogelsanger, Nic Watts, Andy Mahoney and Jason Johnson stood up for the Mulies.

Kelly said 21-year-old Maguire has been suffering from heart problems and would have openheart surgery in the near future.

“Cam is an exceptional football player and is so positive about his condition,” he said.

“He has never once complained and will never use it as an excuse. He is a genuine bloke and will do anything for the club.”

Kelly said that even though Cam may never play football again he would remain a vital part of the Mulies Football Club.

“We did win a premiership but we won it for Cam and that is a big deal,” he said.

The Mulies have been celebrating after a hard-fought season.
