Footy fans were treated to an electrifying Onshore Cup grand final on Saturday.

The Dunsborough Yallingup Mulies won their 12th straight premiership, beating the Busselton Bombers by just two points.

After observing a minute’s silence in memory of Bombers stalwart Leo Clifford, who passed away on September 10, the teams went head-to-head in front of an excited crowd. After an undefeated season the stage was set for the Bombers to break their grand final drought in their 25th year.

The match was a brutal back and forth tussle, with Busselton ahead at the halfway mark and at the end of the third quarter.

Either side could have won, but in the end it was the Mulies who prevailed on 9.7 (61) to 9.5 (59).

Mulies coach Trent Kelly said it was an extraordinary game and they were lucky to be on the right side of the ledger.

“It looks like it might be an Australian record, which is a massive achievement for the club,” he said.

“It was some of the best football I have ever seen being played down here, including games in the South West league.” Kelly said the Mulies had their best team on the park but the Bombers displayed their trademark fighting spirit.

“We took it to them as much as they took it to us,” he said.

“It’s just how the cards fell on the day. You can’t say we were any better than them. We just happened to be two points ahead at the end.”

Kelly applauded Mulies’ Aaron Murphy and Nic Watts for playing key roles in securing the “well earned” victory.

Bombers coach Scott Tondut said he “couldn’t be prouder” of his players.

“It was an arm wrestle from start to finish,” he said.

“Like any grand final, we just threw everything at it.

“There wasn’t a single player who didn’t try their hardest.

“Credit to the Mulies, they came out with a goal in mind and they achieved it.”

Tondut said Bomber Tony Page won best on ground — a remarkable achievement for someone from the losing side — and Darren Kirkham excelled by kicking six goals.

He said the priority for the club next year was to stay together and work on their fitness.
