Magpies face Sunday knockout

Busselton coach Greg Hodson has called for the black and white army to swarm Payne Park this Sunday as the team faces their second straight knockout final.

The Magpies will play Eaton after defeating Carey Park in an unbelievable elimination final last weekend.

A seesawing four quarters resulted in scores being locked at full-time.

Busselton’s Josh Hewett then kicked the only goal in the extra 10 minutes to seal the 16.12 (108) to 15.11 (101) win.

“It was a courageous effort on behalf of the boys,” Hodson said.

“Before the game I said to the boys it would come down to the last 10 minutes, I didn’t know it was going to be five minutes each way.

“We were two very evenly matched sides; we just wanted to win it more.”

The coach said he was thrilled the team had no “passengers”.

He praised Busselton’s captain Dan McGinlay, vice-captain Jon Meadmore, midfielder Jordan Eastwell, fullback Mason Hislop, ruckman Brent Hall, forward Nathan Bradbury and defender Lance Lucas for their performances.

While Busselton might still be on a high from the incredible win, they face a difficult task against Eaton, who they have not beaten in two seasons.

Hodson was hoping a large contingent of their fans would make the road trip to Bunbury.

“The support from Busselton community was really good (last week). We need black and white everywhere this weekend, ” he said.

Hodson said the Magpies knew they were the underdogs going into the match.

“(Eaton’s) got a very good midfield and they’ve a very well balanced side, ” he said.

“They’ll try to play a certain style of football … it’s just a matter of combatting that.

“We’ll be stretched with our height but we’ve had to put up with that all year.”

Tall timber Joe Budiselik and Brad Kearney are a chance to be promoted from the reserves.

If Busselton win, they will progress to a preliminary final.

The match starts at 2.30pm.
