Education Minister Peter Collier has confirmed the State Government has allocated land for two new primary schools in the Capes region.

Mr Collier told theTimes during his visit earlier this week for the Cabinet sitting the Government had allocated land for two primary schools, in Dunsborough Lakes and Vasse West to cope with the population increase in the area.

However Mr Collier said it was all just in the planning stages and development would not be considered until after 2019.

At the Minister’s Breakfast on Monday morning, Mr Collier answered a question from a member of the public who asked about the existing pressures on public primary schools in the area.

“This is one of the biggest growth areas in the State,” he said.

“ I will say collectively though, across WA, in terms of public education, we’re under pressure everywhere.”

Dunsborough residents were recently asked to voice support for a second primary school in the town, with Dunsborough Lakes developer Wallis Group, asking the Dunsborough community to fill out a survey online.

Mr Collier described Dunsborough as an area of “ pressing need”.

“ Dunsborough Primary School is really quite full at the moment,” he said.

“ It’s got about 760 students.

“ They’ve got capacity for about another 40, which will cope for the next year or two, but there is a land allocation ... which will provide for two more primary schools, which will take the pressure off the existing schools.”
